How do I apply for a marriage license in Malden?
To apply for a marriage license, you and your fiance must come to the City Clerk’s Office during regular business hours and complete an Intention of Marriage. In certain limited instances, the form can be completed by one of the parties to the marriage. If either party is in active military service or is incarcerated, the other party may complete the application for both. To complete this form, you must know your place of birth, your mother’s maiden name and your Social Security number. If you do not have a Social Security number, you must explain, in writing, why you do not. There is a three-day statutory waiting period between the time you apply and the time we can issue the license.
What do I do once I have obtained a marriage license?
You must have a marriage ceremony performed within 60 days of the date you filed your marriage intentions. The license may be used in any city or town in Massachusetts. The ceremony must be performed by a recognized member of the clergy or a Justice of the Peace. The person who performs the ceremony will take the license from you, sign it and return it to our office, where it will be permanently recorded.
